MUSCATINE, Iowa (May 7, 2019) — Kent Corporation, a worldwide leader in manufacturing corn-based products headquartered in Muscatine, Iowa recently had three employees graduate from Leadership Muscatine, a program that aims to develop tomorrow’s leaders to create a better community.
Kent Corporation covers 100 percent of the cost for its employees to participate in Leadership Muscatine. Leadership Muscatine’s Class of 2018-2019 includes Market Research Director Nathan Brewer of Kent Corporation, Department Supervisor Brian Brunson of Grain Processing Corporation (GPC) and Creative Design Coordinator Mike Shield of Kent Nutrition Group (KNG).
“Though I’m a Muscatine native, I learned so much about this community and the great businesses we have here,” said Shield of KNG. “My pride in this city and my employer grew as a result of this program. I would highly recommend Leadership Muscatine, especially if you have a community project in the back of your mind that you’d like to make happen.”
The Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GMCCI) and Muscatine Community College (MCC) expressed their thanks to Kent Corporation and other area employers for their continued support of Leadership Muscatine.
“When I joined Kent last year, I looked for ways participate in the company’s history of employee community engagement,” said Brewer of Kent Corporation. “The prospect of learning more about the community through the Leadership Muscatine, and how I could potentially help the community, was a terrific opportunity for me. I’m looking forward to taking these learnings and putting them into practice in the future.”
Participants visited Muscatine-area businesses and organizations, to learn about the support they offer the community and how they function, including the Muscatine Center for Social Action (MCSA), Muscatine Community College, City Hall, Police Department, Fire Department, UnityPoint Health Trinity Muscatine, the Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GMCCI), Muscatine Power & Water, Kent Corporation and the Muscatine Art Center.
“What I hope to take from Leadership Muscatine is really what I hope to give, which revolves around the project portion,” said Brian Brunson of Grain Processing Corporation who, through Leadership Muscatine, is creating Michaela’s Hope, a mental health awareness project that will honor and continue the giving and loving spirit of his daughter, Michaela. Brian Mussehl of First National Bank and Zachary Kinrade of CBI Bank and Trust are also involved in the creation of Michaela’s Hope.
As part of the commencement exercises, graduates presented four group projects and three individual projects. Projects include revitalizing downtown, adult mentoring, the Weed Park pavilion, Windows on Muscatine, PechaKucha Muscatine volume two, Hometown Turnaround and Micaela’s Hope.
The graduation ceremony was held at the Muscatine Art Center on April 25. The GMCCI and MCC offered their congratulations to the Leadership Muscatine class of 2018-2019. The graduates were thanked for their hard work in making Muscatine a great place to live, work and play.
