WASHINGTON, Indiana (January 29, 2015) – Kent Corporation recently contributed $25,000 to the newly established scholarship fund for children of employees from its Grain Processing Corporation (GPC) plant in Washington. This match donation brings a total of $50,000 to the employee-founded scholarship fund for students with parents and guardians employed by the Daviess County, Washington, Indiana plant complex. Currently, the site employs 175 people.
“As an employer, Kent Corporation sees the importance of developing a skilled pool of potential employees from which we and other area employers can recruit,” said Doyle Tubandt, president of Kent Corporation. “This scholarship program is providing our employees’ children the opportunity to get a higher education and become qualified, educated, and skilled individuals.”
The idea for a scholarship for employees’ children came directly from a group of GPC employees. After an employee-comprised committee established the scholarship and raised the initial funds through fundraising events and an optional payroll deduction program, Kent announced the matching donation.
The employees took a number of steps to ensure the scholarship was a long term and fair opportunity. In order to do so, the committee partnered with the Daviess County Community Foundation, a nationally accredited organization that specializes in supporting charitable endeavors such as the scholarship fund.
“When we came up with the idea, we knew we wanted the scholarship to last forever, not just a year or two,” said Jason Fry, employee at the GPC plant complex in Washington. “We are excited about providing students with the opportunity for education after high school.”
The first scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded in Spring 2015. Dependents of employees of the GPC plant in Washington, Indiana are eligible to apply. The Daviess County Community Foundation will select the recipient and award the scholarship funds to the recipient’s chosen college or trade school.
