Muscatine, IA – Irene Kent, the mother of Kent Corporation’s Chairman and CEO Gage Kent, passed away May 28, 2016 at her home in Muscatine surrounded by her family. She was 90. Her husband, James, preceded her in death on October 29, 2012.
Irene Isabelle Kemp Kent was born December 19, 1925 in Rose Hill, IA, the daughter of Harry Amos Kemp and Anna Faye (MacDonald) Kemp. Irene graduated from William Woods College, Fulton, MO in 1945 and received her BS degree in Physical Education from the University of Tulsa, OK in 1947. She came to Muscatine in 1948 as the Women’s Basketball Coach at the YWCA. On June 19, 1949, Irene was united in marriage to James Howard Kent in Oskaloosa, IA.
She was a beautiful person and devoted to her family. Irene was the ultimate example of Christian faith, forgiveness, and kindness. Irene attended Calvary Church. She was a 50+ year member of PEO Chapter JR, a member of the WestEnd Fortnightly club, served on the Board of Directors of the YWCA and the Muscatine Art Center. She enjoyed playing bridge, golfing and was an excellent cook.
Irene’s greatest legacy is her children and their families who will greatly miss her.
Left to remember her are her two children: Katy Vandygriff and Gage Kent of Muscatine. Also remembering her are Katy’s husband, Cecil Vandygriff and children: Molly and Josh Boyer and their children Anna, Ava, Ella and Era Boyer of Muscatine, and Stephanie Vandygriff and her daughter Cecilia of Chicago, IL: and Gage’s children: Jimmy Kent and Emma Kent of Muscatine; and one brother, Harry H. (Rachael) Kemp, Oskaloosa, IA.
